Commonwealth had the late-game pulse back. The Elks had the ball again after a Saskatchewan punt. Then the drive went backward: holding, a sack, and a punt from the Edmonton 6.
Saskatchewan did not need fireworks after that. Starting near midfield, the Roughriders leaned on short runs, then Edmonton penalties turned a sack at the 19 into first down at the 4. From there, Saskatchewan kneeled it away, leaving the Elks with a two-point loss and their first stumble after a 6-1 start.
It had been that kind of night from the opening minutes. Edmonton scored first on a 3-yard touchdown run, only for Saskatchewan to answer with an 87-yard kickoff return to the Edmonton 9 and a 1-yard plunge three plays later. The Elks kept hanging around with field goals from 24, 44, 13 and 22 yards, and the defence opened the third quarter with an interception at the Edmonton 38, but Saskatchewan kept finding the goal line when it mattered.
The loss drops Edmonton to 6-2, with the streak now at L1. It was not a collapse so much as a game of small margins that all got expensive: a missed chance after the third-quarter takeaway, a failed stop before the late Saskatchewan touchdown and two penalties on the closing possession that turned a defensive stand into the final dagger.
