The one Edmonton fans will retell is the fourth quarter: tied-up nerves, Ottawa hanging around after a third-quarter touchdown, then the Elks hitting the gas and leaving the RedBlacks behind. Edmonton scored 24 in the final frame, turning a 16-14 game into a 40-17 finish at Commonwealth Stadium.
The surge started with C.Fajardo finding K.Julien-Grant for a 4-yard touchdown early in the fourth. After Ottawa answered with a field goal, Fajardo came right back with a 33-yard touchdown pass to J.Rankin, and then the defence supplied the dagger: C.Garnes picked off J.Maier, setting up a drive capped by Rankin’s 31-yard touchdown run.
The defence kept taking the ball away, too. K.Jackson intercepted J.Maier twice, T.Ford had another pick before halftime, and Edmonton turned Ottawa’s late mistakes into control. V.Blanchard added the finishing points, including a short field goal in the final minute, as the Elks closed out a 40-17 win and improved to 4-1.
